Apple buys Promixity
Dec 4th, 2006
This announcement appeared on Proximity's
website this morning.
"We are pleased to announce that all Proximity technology and
intellectual property, including artbox workgroup and artbox
enterprise, was recently acquired by Apple.
"We remain a dedicated leading provider of creative media asset
management and production workflow software. Our cutting edge
production workflow solutions are widely considered the defacto
standard for the ingestion, retrieval, browsing, editing, management,
cataloging and storage of broadcast rich-media assets. Proximity
solutions empower the customer to Protect, leverage and extend media
with the best-of-breed equipment available in broadcasting today."
This is an interesting addition to Apple's portfolio of
technologies, with asset management at an enterprise level being a
sinificant gap in the product line-up. This is probably the second
asset management technology company purchased by Apple, given that many
people think that the UK company S.A.L.T. was purchased by Apple about
18 months ago. S.A.L.T. produced asset management tools for Shake. That
site has been taken down and it appears that some of the former
employees have relocted form the UK to Cupertino, near Apple's
headquarters.
It's looking like a very interesting NAB 2007 for Apple. At NAB
2006, Apple were showing Proximity's tools as their answer to Avid
Interplay.
